Kent Girls elite FC launches

On the 30th June 2020, Gillingham FC took the extremely difficult decision not to renew the Regional Talent Club license for the 2020/21 season. Against the backdrop of the global pandemic and the shut down and subsequent ending of the previous season of football the football club had to take all steps to cut costs to survive.

The decision was gut wrenching for the talented girls currently part of the RTC set up at Gillingham but more importantly for the wider girls football community in Kent. The Gillingham RTC was the only Kent based RTC and the only complete football pathway into the national leagues in Kent.

As devastating as it was for the girls and the wider community, the parents of the girls were undeterred. A committee was formed with the following objective:

"To work with the relevant parties to continue and maintain a Kent based RTC, failing which we will aim to provide a solution that maintains the same level of facility, coaching and player development as expected under an RTC licence; by September 2020"
Ex RTC Committee

We set about our objective talking extensively to the National FA, The Kent FA, Kent Schools FA, Kent based football clubs at national league level and at grass roots level.

It became clear that the continuation of an RTC in Kent was not going to be possible. So we then focused on delivering a programme for talented girls based in Kent to receive the same level of coaching and development as an RTC. The essence of this plan was to:

  • Create a programme that keeps all of the RTC girls together
  • Continue two nights of professional training per week
  • Retain the same level of coaching via the highly skilled paid coaches
  • Run a league programme that would allow the girls to be challenged at all levels
  • Maintain the player pathway from youth to senior football

Conversations continued to deliver this ambition and through consultation with the Kent FA we have developed a go forward plan for the 53 girls that were members of the RTC.

KENT GIRLS ELITE FC was established as a new club on the 1st July 2020. The club will work extremely closely with the Kent FA to deliver the programme. The Kent FA will run a Player Development Centre where all of the girls in Kent can attend professional level training and development.  KGEFC will work in partnership with teh Kent FA to provide training and development and a league programme for the girls that attend the PDC.

KGEFC are in the process of establishing formal affiliations with a number of established senior ladies clubs throughout the county to provide a pathway from Under 10’s to senior ladies football. We feel this provides the best possible solution for the talented footballing girls in Kent.

Welcome to Kent Girls Elite FC, Kent’s leading talent club for girls in Kent.
